Adding rear seats to a van (often called a "van conversion" or creating a "crew van") can be a practical upgrade—but it must be done safely and legally. At Vanarack we only supply and install safety tested seats and seat conversions. Our installations come with a certificate of conformity, assuring you that you are legal and compliant.

Here's everything you should know:

1. Can You Add Rear Seats to a Van?

Yes—but:

  • It must be done to legal and safety standards.

  • The van may need to be reclassified with the DVLA (in the UK) or equivalent authority in your country.

 2. Types of Vans Commonly Converted

  • Panel Vans (e.g., Ford Transit, VW Transporter, Vauxhall Vivaro)

  • Car-Derived Vans (less common, due to size limitations)

  • Crew Vans already have partial rear seating—often easier to modify

3. What’s Involved in Adding Rear Seats?

Structural & Safety Work:

  • Install seats securely bolted to structural mounting points or a reinforced subframe.

  • Add 3-point seatbelts for all new seats.

  • Consider adding headrests and child seat anchor points (ISOFIX) if needed.

  • Optional: Add side windows, lighting, heating/ventilation in the rear.

Legal/Registration Tasks (UK Example):

  • Notify DVLA: You must update the body type on the V5C (logbook)—e.g., from "van" to "MPV" or "crew van."

  • MOT: Future MOTs will assess the new seats and seatbelts.

  • Insurance: Must inform your provider—modification affects classification and cover.
